Beetroot is one of those humble roots that carries far more depth than its modern-day use as a salad ingredient or juice. In ancient times, across different cultures, it was seen as medicine, a sacred food, and an energy tonic. Much of that knowledge has been forgotten or diluted. Let me bring some of that forward for you:

Ancient and Forgotten Knowledge of Beetroot

1. Blood and Vital Force

In many old traditions, the deep red of beetroot was linked to life-force, vitality, and purification of the blood.

Ancient Greeks and Romans saw it as a food that “refreshes the blood” and strengthens the heart.

Ayurveda recognized it for improving rakta dhatu (the blood tissue), helping circulation, and supporting menstruation in women.

2. Natural Tonic for Endurance

Ancient athletes in Rome consumed beetroot before competitions, as it increased stamina and oxygen capacity.

Its natural nitrates expand blood vessels, improving flow and endurance , knowledge rediscovered by modern science but practiced long ago.

3. Spiritual and Energetic Use

Its grounding energy was valued in rituals. Eating roots like beetroot was believed to connect one back to Earth’s energies, strengthening balance between body and spirit.

In some old European traditions, it was offered to deities of fertility and protection.

4. Detoxifier of Body and Mind

Ancient healers prescribed beetroot for cleansing the liver, which was seen as the “seat of emotions.”

By purifying the liver, beetroot was said to lighten emotional burdens, anger, and heaviness of spirit.

5. Feminine Cycles & Fertility

Beetroot was often used as a supportive food for women.

Its iron, minerals, and blood-building properties were known to ease menstrual difficulties, support fertility, and balance cycles.

Some old texts called it “the womb’s food.”

6. Longevity and Rejuvenation

Traditional Persian medicine called beetroot a rejuvenator that prevented premature aging.

It was boiled into soups for the elderly to strengthen bones and keep vitality flowing.

7. Protection Against Darkness

Folklore from Slavic regions mentions beet juice used in protective charms against negative energies and ill health.

Its redness was symbolic of warding off evil eye and restoring life-force in the weak.

8. Earth’s Memory Keeper

Beetroot, being a root vegetable, holds “memory” of the soil. Ancient cultures saw roots as carriers of Earth’s wisdom, and beetroot’s vibrant pigment was seen as the Earth’s hidden fire rising to nourish humans.

In essence, beetroot was never just “food.” It was medicine, a sacred offering, a blood purifier, a fertility booster, and a spiritual protector.

Let’s bring the forgotten ancient uses of beetroot into practical ways for today, so you can revive the benefits in both body and spirit:
